This limited edition publication of previously unreleased material documenting the preparatory work of the last paintings, encompasses a body of thousands of photographs produced during the last years of the painter’s life.
When he was no longer able to draw due to his advanced age, Balthus resorted to using a Polaroid camera as a sort of prosthesis, at once hand and pencil, thus regaining access to the mysterious ritual of sketching, the only process by which he could approach and meticulously define the mental image from which the painting would proceed. As a substitute to drawing, these photographs fully articulated the painstaking and persistent practice that Balthus followed for nearly a century.
Published by Gerhard Steidl, this publication is issued as a box set containing two books: the first volume present the series of Polaroids with emphasis on the artist's methodical search for composition; the second volume feature enlargements of selected photographs. The first volume also contain a collection of testimonials from Balthus himself, the model, as well as the painter's partner and technical assistant, Countess Setsuko Klossowski de Rola. This limited edition box set feature a unique printing of 1000 copies.
