The Balthus Foundation’s fifth annual exhibition since the death of the painter in 2001, echoed the cultural program of the municipality of Rossinière, which included a design competition, on the theme of the cat.
Curated by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, the eldest son of Balthus, more than 200 works were displayed for nine weeks at the Grand Chalet in Rossinière. Among the paintings, drawings, prints, and sketches, the celebrated Le chat de la Méditerranée (1949) and Le roi des chats (1935) testified to the omnipresence of the feline companion in Balthus's work and life. The cat is already present in his first work, a series of forty drawings made when he was about ten years old, Mitsou, published in 1921 with a foreword by his mother's companion, Rainer Maria Rilke. Along side the two paintings and other studies by Balthus, were a Picasso etching, a drawing by Bonnard, a bronze by Folon, as well as a set of signed works by Théophile-Alexandre Steinen, the artist from Lausanne famous for his posters of the Parisian cabaret Le Chat noir.
Several oil paintings, a mosaic, and other painted objects by Balthus's widow, under her artist name, Setsuko, were also exhibited.
Over 150 objects, mostly from the private collection of the late Antoinette de Watteville, the first wife of Balthus, complemented the artwork, including porcelains, bronzes, antique mechanical figurines, and jewellery from different epochs and cultures.
2 July - 17 September 2006
The fourth exhibition of the Balthus Foundation, curated by Dominique Radrizzani, director of the Musée Jenisch in Vevey, successfully brought many visitors to the Grand Chalet in Rossinière.
The exhibition invited the viewer to reflect on the genius of Balthus as a landscape painter. An impressive series of preparatory studies, watercolours, and drawings hung alongside the celebrated paintings La Bergerie, the two versions of Paysage de Monte Calvello, as well as unfinished canvases. Shown in parallel were works by artists who inspired and nourished Balthus's talent, such as Renaissance drawings, work from Cézanne, Giacometti, and others. The photographs and a film of Harumi Klossowski further enriched the show, adding a contemporary viewpoint. A catalogue with reproductions of the entire exhibition was published.
26 June - 30 October 2005
The third exhibition of the Balthus Foundation was curated by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, Balthus's eldest son.
The exhibition included nine important sketchbooks and 89 watercolours and drawings, some of which were previously unpublished. This was the first time that much of this work was available to the public, with over two-thirds of the exhibition being shown for the very first time.
An excerpt from a DVD made specifically for the exhibition was screened during the exhibition, inviting the visitor to discover the mysteries of these sketchbooks, a conceptual voyage through the artistic genesis and evolution of Balthus's work.
16 March - 15 June 2006

4 July - 3 October 2004
The second exhibition organized by the Balthus Foundation was dedicated to the photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martine Franck, reuniting all their portraits of Balthus, his entourage, and views of his studio. The exhibition was curated by Dominique Radrizzani, director of the Musée Jenisch in Vevey.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Tourist Office of Rossinière sponsored a design competition, on the theme of the cat, in tribute to the memory of Balthus. The contest continues to be held, detailed information can be found at: www.roideschats.com
21 September - 16 November 2003
The opening of the exhibition, La Jeunesse de Balthus, at the Grand Chalet on 20 September served as a double inauguration, both for the renovation of the famous Grand Salon, as well as the reception for the first in an annual series of thematic exhibitions to be shown there.
Curated by Dominique Radrizzani, director of the Musée Jenisch in Vevey, this exhibition sought to illuminate a lesser known period in the life of Balthus. With previously unseen material, she was able to reconstruct the universe of the artist's formative years. It brought together a series of early paintings and drawings, as well as gouaches and canvases signed by the artist's parents. A selection of illustrated books, letters, photographs, and other original documents were also on view to complement the artwork.
