1932 – 1939
Lives in Paris, the "theater of modernity and its malaise" - the harshness of the world, the experience of poverty.
1940 - 1953
Moves to Switzerland with Antoinette de Watteville, his first wife, with whom he has two sons. Returns to Paris in 1946.
1953 – 1961
Leaves Paris once again to get away from the noise and scandals of the city. Settles in the Morvan.
1961 – 1977
Balthus is named director of the Académie de France at the Villa Medici by André Malraux, Minister of Culture. During a visit to Japan in 1962, the painter meets his future wife, Setsuko Ideta.
1977 – 2001
After sixteen years in Italy, Balthus moves with his family to the Grand Chalet in Rossinière, Switzerland.
